The Sonora Sunrise Rotary Club wanted to create a club foundation to solicit donations that could be used for the benefit of the County of Tuolumne. In addition, the Sonora Sunrise Rotary Club wanted to create an Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3) non-profit foundation which would allow the club more flexibility in fund raising and applying for grants to support the club’s projects. The Sonora Sunrise Rotary Club Foundation is a complement to The Rotary Foundation and does not directly compete with The Rotary Foundation. The Rotary Foundation focuses on international projects while the Sonora Sunrise Rotary Club Foundation focuses on projects within the County of Tuolumne.
The Sonora Sunrise Rotary Club Foundation, Inc. is a non-profit, tax exempt 501(c)(3) organization and an affiliate of the Sonora Sunrise Rotary Club of Sonora, California that was created on February 2, 2004. It is dedicated to supporting programs and initiatives that serve the community and to advancing the ideals of the Sonora Sunrise Rotary Club and Rotary International. It supports causes which enhance educational opportunities, improve quality of life, improve access to health care, address social problems, advance charitable giving, and/or provide emergency relief. The foundation exists primarily for the benefit of the residents of Tuolumne County, but may also support regional, state and international programs.
Donors may contribute tax deductible gifts to the Foundation in any one or more of the following ways:
- Endowment Fund. Gifts to the Endowment Fund shall be retained in perpetuity. The income derived from investment of such gifts shall be utilized to make charitable contributions, and any realized gain in value may also be utilized for such purpose.
- Rotating Fund. Cash gifts shall be allocated to the Rotating Fund. Such gifts shall be retained until the beginning of the second fiscal year after receipt and then utilized to make charitable contributions. All cash gifts received by the Foundation which are not restricted shall be allocated to the Rotating Fund.
- Special Projects Fund. Gifts to the Special Projects Fund may be utilized anytime after receipt.
The Foundation shall make charitable contributions in accordance with the following guidelines:
- Charitable contributions to Tuolumne County area schools and/or to schools in California for educational scholarships for students deemed worthy and needy;
- Charitable contributions for youth activities and to youth organizations within, or substantially benefiting, the Tuolumne County area and/or California;
- Other charitable organizations within, or substantially benefiting, the Tuolumne County area and/or California;
- Charitable organizations which help alleviate suffering in a time of crisis, wherever situated; and
- Other charitable organizations approved by a majority of the Board of Directors of the Corporation, wherever situated.
